Searching for Magnetic Fields in the Cosmic Web

Detecting an extremely faint signal by combining thousands of measurements statistically. An interactive look at how data quality and sample size decide what you can find. Early prototype.

Magnetic fields thread the cosmic web, but they are so faint that no single sightline reveals them. In my 2021 paper I stacked thousands of rotation measures and cross-correlated them against the large-scale structure to place an upper limit on the field strength.

This interactive sandbox lets you toggle the data and watch the detectability floor move: sharper measurements (LoTSS versus NVSS) and larger samples both tighten what we can constrain. It is an early prototype with illustrative values for now, with the real data and a full explainer coming soon.
